1970 Scorpion Stinger 340SS, photos of 2007 refurbishing.

November 3, 2007

The 1970 Scorpion Stinger had developed some cracks near the engine mounts. It was time to get those welded, and while everything was disassembled, some refurbishing was in order. I had discovered a wobble in the right hand drive shaft bearing, and that was attended to as well. Thanks to Ron Poppe at Fast Lane Motorsports for his great welding work, and to Greg Stebner for the NOS drive shaft.

The 2005 restoration photos did not show the sled with the decals, which I was still waiting for at the time. I entered the sled for judging at the 2006 Eagle River show, and I took the opportunity to photograph the sled with the first place in class trophy that it won.

The chassis was completely repainted with acrylic enamel.

Motor mounts were repainted, and various bits and pieces cleaned and polished.

.

At top are the show skis, new old stock and very rare to find. I hand polished the original cad plating with White Diamond metal polish.

Below are the original skis, with lots of bumps and bruises. I use these for riding and take them off and repaint every year with Plasti-Kote #1528 silver metallic B/C. It's a fair approximation of what the original finish looked like.

The muffler gets a re-paint every year as well.

The paint job turned out much better than my agonizing ordeal in 2005.

All this polished metal is high maintenance. Even with a clear coat the steel parts like the tie rods will begin to rust within a year of use. The stainless flex pipe and clamps don't rust, but get discolored from the heat and must be re-polished.

The Sachs 340SS runs fine. Didn't touch it at all. I use the GEM ram tube for shows, a big Sachs air box for riding (less fuel spitting).

Decals are on the engine and clutch guard now, which weren't there in the 2005 photos.

The drive shaft was worn on the right end. The bearing would not seat properly and consequently it had a wobble to it. A new drive shft corrected the problem.
